Administering Injections and Handling Sharps

Needle

Subcutaneous Injections

Injection Site: One inch below your belly button or the upper outer area of your thigh, depending on your provider’s instructions.


Medications: Cetrotide, Follistim, Ganirelix, Gonal-F, Leuprolide, Menopur, Ovidrel PFS


Intramuscular Injections

Injection Site: In the muscle of either buttock, below your hip bone.


Medications: Pregnyl, Novarel, Progesterone in Oil

Staying Safe

  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Put used sharps into the disposal container we provided.
  • If you need another disposal container, use a plastic bottle that cannot be punctured and has a screw-on lid.
  • If you use a plastic bottle to store used sharps, close the cap tightly, and write “Contains Sharps” on the cap.
  • Containers such as soda cans, milk cartons, glass bottles are not safe options.
  • Sharps are typically not allowed in trash or recycling and are treated as medical waste.
  • You can dispose of the sharps container at a clinic, hospital, or fire station.
